Princess Maker is a series of raising simulation games published by GAINAX. In it, you are tasked to raise a daughter, scheduling her classes, talking to her, and even have her fight monsters. Your choices will lead her to one of the many life paths she can take. Will she be a woodcutter? A warrior? Or even a princess? There are five different Princess Maker games, the first being released in 1991 and the latest being released in 2007. They were originally Japanese-only, but more recently company CFK have been translating and bringing them to the west through Steam (and soon to Switch) with their remastered "Refine" versions of 1, 2, and 3, and a non-"Refine" version of 5, as well as the board game spin-off, Princess Maker: Go! Go! Princess. The anime series Petite Princess Yucie is also based off of this series, particularly 3.
as someone who really enjoys life simulation games (obviously, considering the forum i'm on), princess maker is really my cup of tea. i've been playing a lot of PM5 recently in particular, which is a lot different than the others because it takes place in modern japan, and i've been super enjoying it a ton. especially considering i've pretty much done nothing but play this game since my week-long break has started...
anyway, i thought it'd be cool to have a thread about it. so yeah! thoughts about the games, showing off your daughter, all is welcome! don't forget to hide spoilers with the [spoiler] tag, though.

PM2 is an absolute classic that any Sim fan should give a hand at. Sometimes it leans a little too "Gainax," but the gameplay is absolutely solid.
How does PM5 handle the modern setting btw? Like, a modern setting surely wouldn't have dungeons... right? So how's income handled?

Like, a modern setting surely wouldn't have dungeons... right? So how's income handled? it does, actually! your daughter is originally from another world, where they went through this portal that Cube made to escape an uprising... at some point in the game, Cube gives you the option to open a portal back so that she can dungeon. it's funny though cus it's like, oh, my daughter is really good at fighting monsters because of all the karate classes and wrestling matches she watched. lol
here's the opening btw, where Cube does the portal thing. (the opening absolutely caught me off guard watching this for the first time...)income is handled really interestingly! you choose an occupation in the beginning of the game (academic/manager/public servant/office worker/freelancer) and your monthly income is based on that, as well as bonuses and credit (if you need to borrow money). for example, an academic would have the same income each month but get no bonuses, an office worker would have a salary that starts small but gets bigger as time goes on, and a freelancer would have a totally random monthy income each year.
but yeah, i think a modern setting is really fun, partly because i've always been really partial to magical realism and slice-of-life things. it moves at a slower pace than say, PM2, because you schedule her weekly instead of monthly, and she also goes to school and stuff. there are also a LOT of NPCs (classmates) she can befriend so there's a lot more relationship management... but i love all the little touches and things you can do. like you can take your daughter to places in town every sunday like to the movies or cherry blossom viewing, and she gets a report card so you try to make sure she keeps up with her studies, and she can run for student council and stuff and. man. good game

I found out about this game from a genderbend version called Prince Maker: Braveness (never played it though). I definitely want to play it sometime but I keep forgetting about it. Looks like my kinda thing but I'd be scared to raise her wrong.

Looks like my kinda thing but I'd be scared to raise her wrong. ohhhh I have Prince Maker! never got super far into it though. I actually got into the series through Hanako Games' Cute Knight which I played a ton of when I was a kid. honestly, maybe it's just me, but I feel like it's kinda hard to raise her wrong? like it's hard to raise her to be the best as possible, sure, but I feel like you'd have to be actively cruel to her before she'd hate you or do bad stuff. or have low morality. as long as you talk to her and you're trying to be a good parent I honestly think you'd be fine.

Whoa I've heard of this game but never really looked into it. If it comes out on Switch I could definitely see myself giving it a chance.
How come no more games have been released? 2007 is a pretty long time ago!

Did my first run of PM3 the other night. As was probably predictable, my daughter ended up a musician. I remember the game getting a lot of praise from Japanese-speakers when I was neck-deep in that old version of PM2 like, a decade ago, but I feel like I must be missing something. No dungeons to explore and the festivals aren't nearly as interesting, nor do they highlight your daughter's career path very well.
